I spent the last few days at the casa de los ciclistas running errands and hanging out with Phil. At the market next door I had someone replace the broken buckles on one of the Ortlieb panniers, had my rain pants sewed up, got some time on the internet, went shopping, installed the new rim, tightened the cables, replaced the brake pads... phew.

The other visitors to the casa were an Argentine travelling from Venezuela to Buenos Aires, Nigel the Australian who came back from Lima with a Canadian woman, a Spanish couple from the Canarias, Phil, and Kate from Ireland who is heading south.

I had a late breakfast with Phil before taking a few photos in front of the casa, then it was finally on the road at 11:30. The first 20 kilometers was flat ride through sugar cane and corn fields before the climbing started back up into the mountains. A cop waved me over at a checkpoint but he just wanted to talk for a bit about my trip. There was some pretty stiff climbing to end the day but it was all paved. The road winds up through another one of these river canyons so finding a place to camp wasn't easy... finally I came across a good sized embankment that had a shelf on the other side before dropping off. Just enough room to fit the tent, as a bonus an irrigation canal was running right next to me so I couldn't hear the traffic.
