After two months echando hueva (fucking off) I awoke with a bad case of dread knowing that I was going to suffer for such a long layoff, and I turned out to be right. I went out for a leisurely breakfast before loading up the bike and heading out. It was hot, the temperatures have noticeably increased since I first arrived in December. I had figured that I would be in for a chaotic city ride to get out of town but it didn't turn out to be too bad. There is an access road next to Avenida Vallarta that allowed me to leave the city without too many close calls, at least by Guadalajara standards.

My legs were already hurting after 20 kilometers. I drank a ton of water to try and mitigate what will surely be a bad case of soreness coming tomorrow. The cuota highway provided a stress-free, music-listening ride for the rest of the afternoon. I was really struggling up the hills so I decided to make it a short day and got a hotel room in Magdelena after just 70 kilometers. I collapsed on the hotel bed in sheer happiness at having a comfy place to rest.

Packed and ready to go. The little handlebar bag is a new addition that I picked up at Decathlon in France.

On my way out of Guadalajara a guy crashed his pickup into a light pole a hundred meters in front of me. Some of the wires fell onto the car and the ones crossing the road slumped down too low to let the trucks past. The transformer on the pole was sparking but the driver was able to get out and seemed okay. A serious traffic jam surely ensued.

That gut wasn't there two months ago. I stopped riding but my appetite kept right on going as if I were still banging out 120k per day.
